Description
(-)-Gallocatechinisapolyphenoloriginallyderivedfromavarietyofsources,includinggreentea,coffee,safflower,andalmonds;itistheepimerof(-)-epigallocatechin.(-)-Gallocatechin,likeothercatechins,exhibitsavarietyofbeneficialproperties,includinganti-diabetic,antioxidative,antiviral,andantibacterialactivities.Invivo,(-)-gallocatechininhibitsα-amylase,decreasingabsorptionofcarbohydratesandpreventingincreasesinbloodglucoselevels.ThiscompoundincreasesrADIcalscavenginginvitroandalsoinhibitsthehemorrhagicactivitiesofmatrixmetalloproteinases.Invitro,(-)-gallocatechindirectlyinhibitsHIV-1reversetranscriptaseandintegrase,alsoupregulatingexpressionofIL-2anddownregulatingexpressionofIL-10andTNF-α.(-)-Gallocatechindecreasesosteoclastogenesis,inhibitsosteoclastdifferentiationandresultinginapositiveeffectonbonemetabolism.Thiscompoundalsoinhibitsgrampositivebacteria,preventingformationofStreptococcus-induceddentalcaries.
