Description
(-)-Epinephrineistheactiveisomerofepinephrine,anendogenoushormoneneurotransmitter.Epinephrineexhibitsbronchodilatory,vasoconstrictiveandcardiostimulantory/positiveinotropicactivities.Epinephrineactsasanon-selectiveagoNISTatbothα-andβ-adrenergicreceptors,activatingthesympatheticnervoussystem.Epinephrineisclinicallyusedtotreatcardiacarrestandanaphylaxis,asitincreasescardiacoutputandperipheralresistanceanddecreasesedemabysuppressingleakagefromconstrictedvessels.Thiscompoundalsoinhibitsinsulinsecretion,increasesglucagonandadrenocorticotropichormone(ACTH)secretion,andinducesglycogenolysis,glycolysis,andlipolysistoincreaseenergyproduction.
