17-α-ethynylestrADIolisasyntheticestrogenreceptor(ER)agoNISTclinicallyusedincontraceptivemedications.Inpregnantrats,17-α-ethynylestradioldecreasesplateletactivatingfactoracetylhydrolaseactivity,inducingprematurebirth.17-α-ethynylestradiolalsodisplaysweakantioxidativeactivityinlipidperoxidationassaysinlivermicrosomes.Bothacuteandchronicexposureofwildlife(particularlyfish)to17-α-ethynylestradiolleadstofeminizationofmales(throughtheinductionofvitellogeninproduction),inhibitingfertility.
