Description
Astaxanthinisacarotenoidfoundinsea-dwellingcreaturessuchasshrimp,salmon,andalgae;itdisplaysneuroprotective,anti-inflammatory,anti-hyperlipidemic,antioxidative,anti-diabetic,andcognitionenhancingactivities.Astaxanthinenhancesperformanceinanimalsundergoingthewatermazetest,increasesneuronalsurvival,anddecreaseshippocampalexpressionofTNF-α.Astaxanthinalsodecreasestotalcholesterolandtriglyceridelevelsandincreaseslevelsandactivityofglutathioneandcatalaseinanimalmodels.Indiabeticanimals,thiscompounddecreasesbloodglucoselevels,suppressesoxidativestress,andimprovescognitivefunction.Additionally,astaxanthinprotectsagainstglutamate-inducedneurotoxicityinvivo.
