Description
All-transretinolisaditerpenoidcomponentofvitaminA.Thiscompoundisanessentialvitaminandisnecessaryforeffectivevision,skinhealth,andbonegrowth.Retinolanditsmetabolitesactivateretinoicacidreceptors(RARs)andretinoidXreceptors(RXRs),bothofwhichhavemultipleisotypesandisoforms.Duringfetaldevelopment,retinolinfluencescellulardifferentiationinavarietyofways.Retinolalsoplaysaroleincancerstemcelldifferentiation,mediatedthroughERK1/2signaling.Intheimmunesystem,retinolappearstoplayaprotectiveroleinautoimmunediseasessuchasmultiplesclerosisandencephalopathy,downregulatingpro-inflammatoryresponsesstimulatedbyTh1andTh17cells.
