Description
Bisdemethoxycurcumin,likeitsparentcompoundcurcumin,exhibitsanticancer,antioxidative,anti-diabetic,anti-inflammatory,andantibacterialactivities.BisdemethoxycurcumininhibitsWntsignalingbyinhibitingWIF-1promoterdemethylationandinhibitsDNAmethyltransferase1(DNMT1),inducingapoptosisinnon-smallcelllungcancer(NSCLC)cells.Bisdemethoxycurcuminalsoinducesapoptosisinotherinvitrocancermodelsthroughincreasesinreactiveoxygenspecies(ROS)andincreasesintheexpressionofp53,p21,p16,andretinoblastoma(Rb)protein.ThiscompoundactivatesSIRT1andAMPKsignaling.BisdemethoxycurcumininhibitsPDGFsignalinginsmoothmusclecells,preventingcellmigrationandproliferation.Bisdemethoxycurcuminmayalsodisplaypotentialbenefitinthetreatmentoftype2diabetes,asitactsasanoncompetitiveinhibitorofpancreaticα-amylase.Likeothercurcuminoids,thiscompoundalsodisplaysphototoxicantibacterialactivity,althoughitisactiveprimarilyagainstgram-positivebacteriaonly.
