Description
Transactivatoroftranscription(TAT)proteinisproducedbyHIV-1andisinvolvedintheinductionofHIV-associatedneurologicdisorders(HAND).TATisaneurotoxinthatinfectsneurons,whichHIVitselfisunabletodo.Inneurons,TATincreasesthenumberofinhibitorysynapsesanddecreasesthenumberofexcitatorysynapsesinaCa2+-dependentmanner.TATalsoactivatesmicrogliaandothermyeloidcells,disruptingcytokine/chemokinehomeostasisandinducingneuroinflammation.Thispeptidesequence(YGRKKRRQRRR)representstheproteintransduction(cell-penetrating)domainofTAT.
