Description
Aripiprazoleisasecondgenerationatypicalantipsychoticthatalsoexhibitsneuromodulatory,antidepressant,anxiolytic,antipsychotic,cognitionenhancing,andantioxidativeactivities.AripiprazoleactsasapartialagoNISTatD2receptorsand5-HT1Areceptorsandasanantagonistat5-HT2AreceptorsandisusedclinicallytotreatschizophreniaandbipolarIdisorder.Aripiprazolealsodisplaysmoderateaffinityforand5-HT2C/6/7receptorsandtheSEROtonintransporter(SERT).AripiprazoleimprovesspatialmemoryintheMorriswatermazetest,exhibitsantidepressantactivityinthePorsolttest,andalsoimprovessocialcompetence,potentiallythroughincreasesinGABAtransmissioninprefrontalbrainregions.Thiscompoundalsopotentiatesnervegrowthfactor(NGF)-inducedneuriteoutgrowthandincreaseslevelsofheatshockprotein90α(HSP90α).Aripiprazoleprotectscellsfromhydrogenperoxide-induceddamage,increasingactivityofsuperoxidedismutase1(SOD1).
