ChlorogenicacidisapolyphenolderivativeofcaffeicacidfoundinEucommiabarkthatexhibitsawidevarietyofbeneficialproperties,includingantibacterial,antioxidative,anti-inflammatory,hepatoprotective,neuroprotective,anti-allergic,anticancerchemotherapeutic,andchemopreventiveactivities.ChlorogenicacidaltersmembranestABIlityofbacteriasuchasStaphylococcus,andmayalsoinhibitpepsinactivity.Chlorogenicacidalsopreventsacetaminophen-inducedliverinjury,preventingactivationofcaspases3and7aswellasphosphorylationofERK1/2,JNK,andp38MAPK;italsoincreaseslevelsofglutathioneandthioredoxinandincreasesactivityofglutathionereductaseandthioredoxinreductase,preventingoxidativestressandapoptosisinvitro.Insimilarinvivomodels,chlorogenicacidpreventsactivationofNF-κBanddecreasesexpressionoftoll-likereceptor4(TLR4),Myd88,iNOS,COX-2,TNF-α,IL-6,andIL-1β.Thiscompounddecreaseshistaminereleaseandinhibitsmastcellactivation,preventingsystemicanaphylaxis.Invitro,chlorogenicacidinhibitsdopamineoxidationandinteractionsbetweendopamineandα-synuclein,indicatingpotentialbenefitinthetreatmentofParkinson’sdisease.Additionally,thiscompoundinhibitsDNAmethyltransferase(DNMT)inanoncompetitivemannerandalsoinhibitsglucose-6-phosphatetranslocase,decreasingexpressionofmatrixmetalloproteinase2(MMP2)andinhibitinggliomacellmigration.
