Description
S-NitroglutathioneactsasaNOdonor,displayingantioxidative,bronchodilatory,vasodilatory,andanticanceractivities.Inthevasculature,S-nitroglutathioneattenuatesPannexin-1channelcurrentsandATPrelease.Inepithelialcellsfromcysticfibrosispatients,S-nitroglutathionepromotesmaturationofthedefectiveCFtransmembraneconductanceregulator(CFTR),increasingcAMP-inducedCl-effluxandimprovingdefectiveCl-transport.DonationofNOtoactinresultsinlesseffectivepolymerizationbutproducesavasodilatoryeffect.Additionally,donationofNOtoproteinsinvolvedininsulinsignaltransductionimprovesinsulinresistance.S-NitroglutathionealsostimulatesactivationofERK1/2andp38,inducingNO-relatedapoptosisincoloncancercells;inthismodel,glutathioneandsuperoxidedismutasearelikelytoplayaroleaswell.
