Protocatechuicaldehydeisapolyphenolfoundinmanyplantsandfoods;itexhibitsanti-inflammatory,cardioprotective,anti-atherosclerotic,andhepatoprotectiveactivities.Inanimalmodelsofischemia/reperfusion,protocatechuicaldehydedecreaseslevelsofcreatinekinase-MB,troponin-1,TNF-α,IL-6,intracellularadhesionmolecule1(ICAM-1),andinhibitorofκBkinase(IKK)andpreventsactivationofNF-κB,decreasinginfarctsize.Additionally,protocatechuicaldehydedecreasesactivityofhigh-mobilitygroupbox1(HMGB1)protein,decreasinglevelsofmyeloperoxidaseandactivationofNF-κBandpreventingsepsisinanimalmodels.Thiscompoundalsodecreasesactivationofcaspase3inendothelialcells,preventingapoptosis.Inanimalmodelsofliverfibrosis,protocatechuicaldehydedecreaseslevelsofcollagen,TGF-β,andconnectivetransforminggrowthfactor(CTGF).
