AsiaticosideisatriterpenefoundinCentellathatexhibitsanti-inflammatory,neuroprotective,cognitionenhancing,antipyretic,antioxidative,pro-angiogenic,anticancerchemotherapeutic,andchemopreventiveactivities.AsiaticosideinhibitsmelanogenesisbydecreasingDNAbindingbyMITF;asaresult,itisoccasionallyusedinskinwhiteningtreatments.Asiaticosideinducesapoptosis,increasesactivationofcaspase3,decreasesreleaseofTNF-αandIL-1β,andsuppressestumordevelopmentandsizeinanimalmodelsofbreastcancer.Inanimalmodelsofcerebralischemia/reperfusion,asiaticosideimprovesmemoryandlearningdeficitsanddecreaseslevelsofIL-6,TNF-α,andIL-1β.Additionally,asiaticosidedecreasesLPS-inducedinflammationandfever,suppressesactivityofmyeloperoxidase,andincreasesactivityofhemeoxygenase1(HO-1)invivo.Thiscompoundalsosupportswoundhealingactivity,increasingcellmigration,attachment,andgrowthinvitro.
