Description
Silybinisaphytoestrogenandflavonoidoriginallyfoundintheseedsofthemilkthistleplant(Silybum).Silybinexhibitsanti-diabetic,anti-inflammatory,anti-angiogenic,anticancerchemotherapeutic,andchemopreventiveactivities.Incellularandanimalmodelsofhepatocellularcarcinoma,silybinincreasesexpressionofTRAILandDR-5,activatescaspasesignaling,anddecreasestumorgrowthandinflammatorycytokinerelease.Inanimalmodelsofdiabetes,silybindecreaseHb1Aclevelsaswellasserumtriglycerides,cholesterol,andglucoseinpancreaticβcells.Additionally,silybininhibitsIL-1β-inducedpro-inflammatorycytokineexpressionandsuppressestranslocationofNF-κBinvitro.Inanimalmodels,thiscompoundsuppressesexpressionofHIF-1αandVEGF,decreasesmicrovesseldensity,anddelaysUV-inducedcarcinogenesis.
