Description
Ferulicacidisametaboliteofverbascosideandahydroxycinnamicacidfoundinvariousplantsourcesthatdisplaysneuroprotective,antioxidative,anti-inflammatory,antidepressant,andantinociceptiveactivities.Ferulicaciddecreasesoxidativestressandinflammation,exhibitingtherapeuticandprotectiveeffectsinanimalmodelsofdiabeticnephropathy.FerulicacidprotectsagainstoxidativedamageincellularmodelsbydecreasinglevelsofIL-1βandTNF-αandincreasinglevelsofsuperoxidedismutaseandglutathione.Inanimalmodels,thiscompoundactsasanantinociceptiveandantidepressant,decreasinglevelsofNE,DA,5-HT,substanceP,p65,andNF-κBinthehippocampusandfrontalcortex.FerulicaciddisplayspotentialbenefitinthetreatmentofAlzheimer’sdiseaseaswell,asitreversesmorphologicaleffectsinducedbyamyloid-β(Aβ)dimersinParacentrotuslividusembryos.Additionally,ferulicacidinhibitspresynapticglutamatereleasefromcorticalsynaptosomesinratsthroughchelationofextracellularCa2+ions.
