FlupirtinemaleateisanagoNISTatvoltage-gatedKCNQ/Kv7K+channels;openingofthesechannelsonneuronsfacilitatesM-currentgenerationanddecreasesaxonalexcitABIlity.InadditiontoitsmodulationofK+channels,flupirtinemaleatealsoinhibitsNMDAreceptorsandshiftsgatingofGABA-AreceptorstodecreasecirculatingGABAconcentrations.Flupirtinemaleateisaneffectivenon-sedativeanalgesic,showingbenefitinclinicaltrialsofneurosurgicalpatients.Inanimalmodels,thiscompoundalsoattenuatesdevelopmentofandreversesestablishedpulmonaryarterialhypertension,suggestingantihypertensiveactivity.
