Description
L-Carnitineisanendogenousquaternaryammoniumcompoundrequiredforfattyacidtransport;itisoftengivenasadietarysupplement.TheL-isomerisactive,exhibitinganti-osteoporotic,antioxidative,andcardioprotectiveactivities.Inaclinicalsetting,L-carnitineadmiNISTrationincreasesmusclecarnitinecontentandworkoutputwhiledecreasingglycogenutilizationduringexercise.Additionally,L-carnitineimprovespostprandialflow-mediateddilation,slightlyincreasingvascularfunction.Inanimalmodels,L-carnitineincreasesbonemineraldensityanddecreasesboneresorption.L-CarnitinealsoimprovesplasmaMarkersofexercisestresssuchasmalondialdehyde.L-Carnitineimprovessymptomsofcardiovasculardiseaseaccompanyingmyocardialinfarctionanddecreasesventriculararrhythmias,symptomsofangina,andmortalityrates.
