Neurokinin A is an endogenous neuromodulatory peptide formerly known as substance K. Like other neurokinins, neurokinin A induces contraction in ileal smooth muscle cells and contributes to nociceptive activity. Neurokinin A exhibits pro-inflammatory, bronchoconstrictive, and vasodilatory activities. In macrophages, neurokinin A binds neurokinin 1/2 (NK1/2) receptors, activating ERK1/2, PI3K/Akt, and NF-κB increasing expression of inflammatory cytokines. Neurokinin A also promotes vasodilation, decreases heart rate, and induces bronchoconstriction in animal models.
