Description
Leptinisanendogenouspeptidethatbindsleptinreceptors;itisinvolvedinfeedingbehaviorandenergyhomeostasis.Leptinexhibitsanorexigenic,antihypertensive,andneuroprotectiveactivities.Leptininducessecretionofα-melanocyte-stimulatinghormone(α-MSH)andgonadotropin-releasinghormone(GnRH).Inobeseandhypertensiverats,leptindecreasesbloodpressure.Thispeptidealsoinhibitsmyocardialmusclecontractilityandmodulatesbonegrowthandresorption.Additionally,leptinmaybeinvolvedinthedevelopmentofatherosclerosis.InanimalmodelsofAlzheimer’sdisease,leptindecreaseslevelsoftauandamyloid-β(Aβ),improvingcognitiveperformance.
