MethysticinisakavalactoneoriginallyfoundinPipermethysticum(kavaplant).Methysticinexhibitsneuroprotective,neuromodulatory,andantifungalactivities.Methysticinmayalsodisplayanti-inflammatorybenefit,inhibitingactivationofNF-κBinlungadenocarcinomatissue.MethysticinactivatesNrf2inneuronsandastroglia,protectingagainstamyloid-β(Aβ)-inducedneurotoxicity.ThiscompounddisplaysantimicrobialefficacyagainstspeciesofFusarium,Trichoderma,andColletotrichum.Additionally,methysticininhibitspeakamplitudeofvoltage-gatedNa+channelsinhippocampalneurons.
