Description

Mirtazapineisapiperazineantidepressantthatalsodisplaysanxiolytic,hypnotic,antiemetic,andorexigenicactivity.MirtazapineactsasanantagoNISTat5-HT2/3receptors,anindirectagonistat5-HT1receptors,andanantagonistatα2-adrenergicreceptors,enhancingNEand5-HTneurotransmission.Thesleep-inducinghypnoticeffectsaremediatedthroughmirtazapine’sinverseagonismathistamineH1receptors,althoughtolerancetothiseffectdevelopsduringchronicuse.Clinically,mirtazapineimprovesthewithdrawalsymptomprofileandaidsinpreventingrelapseinrecentlyabstinentsubstanceabusersinamannersimilarlytootherantidepressants.Thiscompoundalsoshowsefficacyintreatingbehavioralcomplicationsassociatedwithautismspectrumdisorderandpervasivedevelopmentaldisorder.
