Description
Dihydrosanguinarine(DHS)isabenzophenanthridinealkaloidthatisametaboliteofsanguinarine.Thiscompoundexhibitsawidevarietyofantimicrobialactivities(anti-parasitic,antifungal,andantibacterial)aswellasanticancerandanti-inflammatoryproperties.DHSisactiveagainstLeishmania,Botrytis,Erysiphe,Candida,andvariousgrampositiveandgramnegativebacteriaincludingMRSA.Inleukemiacells,DHSinducesdissipationofthemitochondrialmembranepotential,resultinginapoptosisandnecrosis.DHSalsobindsDNAsequencescontainingalternatingGandCbasepairs.Invitro,DHSalsoinhibitsLPS-inducedproductionofNOandIL-6andinhibitsphosphorylationofERK1/2andp38.
