Description
PatulinisamycotoxininitiallyproducedbyspeciesofPenicillumandAspergillusthatiscommonlyfoundasacontaminantinapplesandappleproducts.Inkeratinocytes,patulinincreasesphosphorylationofEGFR,activatesRas/MAPK/Aktsignaling,activatesNF-κB,andincreasesexpressionofcyclinD1andCOX-2,increasingcellproliferation.Patulinexhibitsgenotoxicandanticanceractivitiesinavarietyofcellularmodels.PatulininducesDNAdamagethroughtheformationofcrosslinks.Patulinalsoactivatescleavageofpoly(ADP)-ribosepolymerase(PARP),increasesphosphorylationofEGR-1,andactivatescaspase3,resultinginROS-dependentapoptosisincolorectalcancercellsandleukemiacells.Additionally,patulindecreasestransepithelialresistance,alteringintestinalepithelialbarrierfunction;thismechanisminvolvesinactivationofproteintyrosinephosphatase.
