Description
Progesteroneisanendogenoussteroidhormonethatactivatesprogesteronereceptors(PRs)andinhibitsmineralocorticoidreceptors(MRs),nicotinicacetylcholinereceptors(nAChRs),andσ1/2receptors.Progesteroneexhibitsneuroprotectiveactivity,inducingmyelinsheathformationandsupportingneurotransmission.Progesteronealsoplaysasignificantroleinreproductionandmammaryglanddevelopment.Clinically,thiscompoundisusedtopreventpretermbirthandisoccasionallyusedinhormonereplacementtherapy(HRT).
