Geranylgeraniolisaditerpenealcoholthatisacellpermeableanalogofgeranylgeranylpyrophosphate;itisusedinthebiosynthesisofvitaminE,vitaminK,andotherditerpenes.Geranylgeraniolisabeepheromoneandasubstrateforgeranylgeranyltransferase.Thiscompoundexhibitsanticancer,antibacterial,andcytoprotectiveactivities.Geranylgeraniolinducesapoptosisandinhibitsgrowthofvarioustumorcells.Separately,geranylgeraniolinhibitsgrowthofMycobacteriuminvitroandprotectsmonocytesagainststatin-inducedcytotoxicity.
