GlycyrrhizinisatriterpeneglycosidefoundinGlycyrrhizathatexhibitsantiviral,anti-inflammatory,nephroprotective,neuroprotective,anticancer,chemopreventive,andantioxidativeactivities.Glycyrrhiziniscommerciallyusedasaflavorantandemulsifier.Thiscompoundinhibits11β-hydroxysteroiddehydrogenase.Glycyrrhizinisoccasionallyclinicallyusedtotreatherpesvirusinfections,asitinhibitsviralentrytohostcells.Glycyrrhizinalsoinhibitsrenalischemia/reperfusioninjuryinvivobydownregulatingsignalingofp38MAPKanddecreasingexpressionofIL-6,IL-1β,IFN-γ,andTNF-α.Invitro,glycyrrhizindecreaseslevelsofROSandmalondialdehydeandincreaseslevelsofsuperoxidedismutase.Inotherinvitromodels,glycyrrhizinpreventsglialinflammationandkainicacid-inducedneuronaldeath.ThiscompoundpreventsthedevelopmentofDMH-inducedcancerouslesionsinthecolon,inducesapoptosisandexpressionofp53,anddecreaseslevelsofinflammatorycytokines,COX-2,andVEGF;italsoinhibitscellularproliferationandgrowthinprostatecancercells.
