Description
Naringinisaphytoestrogenandflavanoneglycosideoriginallyfoundincitrusfruitsthatexhibitsanti-angiogenic,anticancerchemotherapeutic,antioxidative,neuroprotective,cognitionenhancing,nephroprotective,andanti-inflammatoryactivities.NaringininhibitsreleaseofVEGFinER+breastcancercells;insimilarcancermodels,naringinincreasesexpressionofp21anddecreasesexpressionofsurvivinandβ-catenin,suppressingcellandtumorgrowth.Thiscompoundbindsestrogenreceptors,actingasaselectiveestrogenreceptormodulator(SERM)inaconcentration-dependentmanner.Naringinalsoimprovescolchicine-induceddeficitsincognitiveperformanceandattenuatesoxidativedamagebydecreasinglevelsofmalondialdehydeandnitratesandincreasingactivityofsuperoxidedismutase,catalase,andglutathione-S-transferase.NaringinalsoimprovescognitivefunctionandCaMKIIactivityinanimalmodelsofAlzheimer’sdisease.Additionally,thiscompoundinhibitsgentamicin-inducedincreasesinTNF-α,IL-6,andNF-κBandsuppresseslevelsofBax,caspase3,andp53.
