Description
NeuropeptideY(NPY)isanendogenouspeptideneurotransmitterthatexhibitsavarietyofproperties,includingvasoconstrictive/hypertensive,neuromodulatory,cognitionenhancing,rewardandreinforcement-modulating,antidepressant,anxiolytic,pro-angiogenic,andpro-atheroscleroticactivities.NPYisproducedbysympatheticnervoussystemneuronsandactivatesYreceptors.Invivo,NPYpotentiatesreward-andreinforcement-inducingeffectsofopioidsinoperantbehaviorassays.Inotheranimalmodels,NPYinhibitsamyloid-β(Aβ)-induceddepressionandspatialmemorydeficitsinthetailsUSPensionandobjectlocationtasks.NPYalsodecreasesorpreventsstress-induceddevelopmentofanxietyduringtheforcedswimtestandelevatedplusmazemodels.Additionally,NPYpromotesvasculargrowthandmayplayaroleinthedevelopmentofatherosclerosis.
